Why Real Food May Be the Right Choice for Tube Feeding
Share
At Food Untethered, we believe that how you nourish your body matters — whether you eat by mouth, by tube, or a combination of both. If you're wondering why more and more people are choosing real, blended foods over traditional commercial formulas for tube feeding, you’re not alone.
Let's dive into the most common questions — and the key things to consider before making the switch!
Why Consider Real Food for Tube Feeding?
Aside from the pure common sense of eating fruits, veggies, proteins, and healthy fats (because seriously, when has processed powder ever been better than a fresh meal?), there's a growing body of evidence showing real benefits for real food tube feeding:
✨ Improved digestion and comfort — Many people report fewer symptoms like acid reflux, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and even reduced need for overnight or continuous feeds when they switch to real food.
✨ Better weight maintenance — Struggling with weight gain or loss on formula? Real food can offer a nutrient-dense, more satisfying option.
✨ Varied, natural nutrition — Whole foods deliver a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and fiber that formulas simply can't replicate. Variety matters, and real meals can offer it!
✨ No clinical evidence favoring formula — Despite decades of commercial formulas being the standard, there are no long-term clinical studies showing that formula is healthier or better tolerated than whole food diets for tube feeding. If formulas were truly superior, wouldn't all of us — oral eaters too — be living off them?
Bottom line: Real food supports the body in a way that processed formulas often can't match.
What Should You Think About Before Making the Switch?
Switching to a real food diet is exciting — but it’s also important to plan carefully. Here are a few key considerations:
1. What Kind of Feeding Tube Is Being Used?
✅ PEG Tubes (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) and G-Tubes
PEGs and G-tubes (or low-profile "buttons") are ideal for real food blends. These tubes are typically wider and placed directly into the stomach, making them well-suited for thicker, blended meals.
🚫 NG Tubes (Nasogastric Tubes) and NJ Tubes (Nasojejunal Tubes)
NG and NJ tubes are smaller and pass through the nose into the stomach or intestines. We do not advocateusing commercial blended meals like ours with NG/NJ tubes due to the higher risk of clogging and the different digestion dynamics involved.
That said, we acknowledge that some people, especially those making their own thin homemade blends, choose to proceed cautiously under medical supervision. If you're considering this with an NG tube, please work closely with your healthcare team and understand the risks.
2. Medical Guidance Is Essential
Before switching to real food, talk with your medical team (doctor, dietitian, GI specialist). You’ll want to:
- Ensure the right calorie and nutrient needs are met.
- Discuss any specific medical conditions that might affect digestion.
- Plan for hydration (more on that here).
- Get help creating a slow, safe transition plan.
Real food is powerful — but starting slowly and thoughtfully is key to success.
3. Practical Considerations
- Blender strength matters: High-powered blenders (like Vitamix or Blendtec) are essential for homemade blends to get them smooth enough.
- Meal storage: If prepping at home, you'll need to portion and refrigerate/freezer meals carefully.
- Feeding method: Gravity feeding and syringe boluses work great for most real food meals. Pump feeding can work too with the right set-up but may need a little adjusting.
- Time: Real food can require a little more prep time than just cracking open a formula can, but many families find the benefits far outweigh the effort.
Final Thoughts: Nourishment Beyond Calories
At Food Untethered, we see tube feeding not just as a medical task — but as a vital, nurturing part of life. Real food can offer real connection to the joy and comfort of mealtime, even when eating happens through a tube.
